What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders. It is characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restrictive and repetitive behaviour. Autistic disorder (autism) is the most severe form of ASD and is known as a complex developmental disability. The other two most recognized forms of ASD being Asperger Syndrome, which lacks delays in cognitive development and language, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, which is diagnosed when the full set of criteria for autism or Asperger Syndrome are not met.

Autism is usually diagnosed when a child is under three years of age. People with Autism tend to have issues with non-verbal communication, and a wide range of social interactions.  It affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize.
